Dear Newly Diagnosed,

The best thing that you can do is to be sure you are connected to a physician and allied health professionals who are experts in Parkinson disease. These are typically the people who keep up to date on the latest research and are actively involved in translating research into best possible clinical practice. I would recommend that you begin a speech exercise program early to help prevent later problems being understood and swallowing safely. Physical exercise has also been shown to be very positive for people with PD. Behavioral treatments are supported by positive outcomes in function in the literature. In summary, be sure that behavioral treatment of PD symptoms is considered along with pharmacological and other medical treatments.

I wish you the best. If you have any specific questions about communication or speech and swallowing treatment options, please write again.
