Thank you for your informative (and entertaining!) presentation at the Parkinson conference at the SF Hyatt on Sept. 10. I believe you recommended stopping Amantadine 1 day before getting a flu shot, and then not resuming it again until 2 weeks after the flu shot. Is this correct? If so, a couple of questions:

1. What effect will suddenly stopping the Amantadine have on my system?

2. Can I resume my normal full dose of Amantadine after 2 weeks, or should I work my way up again?

Thank you very much.

Make sure you check with your dr who prescribed the amantadine for you before stopping it. What I did not get a chance to say was that company that makes the flu shots recommends that anyone on an anti-viral stop taking it 24 hours before the injection and wait until 14 days after to start taking it again. Since the flu shot is a live strain, any anti-vital may kill the flu vaccine.
That is the general rule of thumb, but please check with your dr before stopping the amantidine.
