We've known for years that berries of many kinds are rich in protective nutrients. I believe that what helps prevent disease can also help slow its progression. I strongly recommend servings of berries regularly. -Kathrynne

Posted ImageA new study says that at least two servings per week of strawberries or blueberries can help lower a person’s risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The study showed that women and men who consumed berries at least two times per week were almost 25% less apt to develop the condition than those who ate less than a serving each month.

It is not known how the fruits might help lower the chances of the disease developing, but berries are plentiful in the antioxidants called flavonoids. Flavonoids might protect cells in the brain from being damaged. The antioxidants can be found in vegetables and fruits.

When data was examined in depth by the researchers in relationship to the two sexes, the benefit seemed to be far greater for men than women. The men with the most flavonoids consumed in their diet were 40% less apt to develop Parkinson’s disease than those men who ate the least. Source of flavonoids in the men who participated in the study included berries, apples, red wine and tea.

Women, whose diet was high in flavonoids, were not any less likely to develop the condition than those that had very little flavonoids in their diet.

Parkinson’s is a neurologic disease that is progressive and occurs when brain cells that produce dopamine are destroyed slowly. Symptoms include difficulty in walking and tremors.

Over 130,000 women and men participated in the study. Over 800 people from the study developed Parkinson’s during the follow up of 20 years.

Interesting. But 800/130,000 is about the incidence rate in the general population and 800 hardly seems enough to state berry eaters are 25% less apt to get PD. Also surprised that men were stated to derive more benefit from flavonoids than women ...doesn't intuitively make sense.

Nevertheless, I will continue with my apple a day, green tea, almonds, and berries when I can afford them. Beats taking pills and tastes much better :wink:

Good points, Rich. Without knowing the study methodology, it's hard to say how they determined the 25% figure. Re men vs women, women are somewhat less likely to get PD in the first place and the assumption is that estrogen has a protective effect. It could be that estrogen was more protective in the first place and berries had nothing to do with it.

In any case, I am quite certain the berries would be much better for you than a dusty McD.......

I have been eating 1 cup of berries per day for a while now. I am female and find it odd that the protective effect is only noted in males. What are your thoughts?

Noah, one can only speculate as to why berries appear protective for men but not women. My first thought would be that women are less apt to develop PD than men, probably due to protective effects of estrogen. If that should be the case, that could skew the effects of ingestion of berries upon protection for PD. That doesn't mean you should stop eating berries or other fruits -- some women, obviously, DO develop PD, and thus it may be that berries still may have a positive effect. Aside from that, they are known to be protective against a host of illnesses.
