Dr. Okun-please expand on the research article posted on this Parkinson's website which was titled "Preventing infections in hosts---" dated today in Medical News Today quoting Dr. Nikkah from Erlangen, Germany which stated that fetal stem cells were being used for Parkinson's patients "To date more than 350 PD and approximately 100 HD patients have received primary fetal grafts." Is the article stating that stem cell implantation has been done in 350 Parkinson's patients? Is this a first or have there been previous surgeries done? What has been the outcome of these surgeries? I remember that the X Cell Therapy Center was closed down in Germany by the authorities. Thanks for all you do!

Thank you for the question. I am unaware of any large scale human stem cell trials being published in any of the medical literature. There is a worrisome trend in some people around the world offering fee for stem cells-- stem cell tourism. We highly discourage this use of stem cells, and we would advise anyone interested to enroll in a credible study with a credible institutional review board and informed consent (if you are interested in being a research subject). As a reminder stem cells have not been shown capable of regrowing into multiple brain regions a complex architecture important to treating all the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Hope that helps.
