Sometimes when I stand up from a squating position and don't hold on to something, I start to lose my balance and end up running backwards. I stop when I hit a will or other obstruction. But if there's nothing to stop me, say if I'm outside, I end up falling. What causes this and how can I stop this from happening?

Thanks.

This is a common issue in patients with PD. Usually we recommend retraining in how one arises from a squatting position and a good physical therapist can break up the movements into a safer routine.

Also, many PD patients get dizzy when standing up too fast and have low blood pressure when changing positions so watch out for that issue.

Finally in addition to therapy, sometimes adjustment in dose, interval or medication is helpful.
