CereTom® Assisted Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery

6 posts in this topic

Can you give me any information other than coming directly from marketing info on this new equipment and technique? It appears to be quite a step up from the halo, awake during surgery and placement accuracy of the standard DBS surgery.

There are many frame-based approaches and frameless approaches to DBS. Frameless approaches are not a step up. They have pluses and minuses. A frameless system requires the placement under the skin of some markers that the system will attach to. There is assembly and disassembly. With a frame system there is not the need for marker placement or removal (days before and after the procedure), but the frame may be less comfortable. It is best to proceed with what your surgeon is most experienced using. There is no evidence of superiority yet for a particular approach.

Forgive my lay comment, but I thought that the question was on the pros and cons of the small guide frame, used in tandem with the CereTom movable CT scanner. For intra-operative CT-guided lead placement.

As shown in the video from OHSU

I don's have anything specific to say about the system since I have no personal experience with it. I will say however that many scientists and companies have been introducing novel ways to perform DBS. Most of the techniques are very interesting and we will know more on safety and effectiveness as they are tested and we see publications. Sorry, I can't give you more specific information.
