Sinemet CR vs. Stalevo

Recommended Posts

Different mixes of drugs. Sinemet CR is an extended release drug and in general does not last much longer than regular sinemet and some experts do not use it at all. Stalevo is regular sinemet plus COMTAN. the comtan component will make the sinemet last a little longer in some patients but will also raise the blood level of dopamine and could precipitate dyskinesia in some cases.

Do you see anything wrong with taking Sinemet in place of Stalevo for one of the doses of the day if the patient takes Stalevo 3 times a day ordinarily? This way there will be less comtan in the body and still get the long lasting effects of Stalevo for the day.

Do you think mixing the 2 drugs although not taken at the same time is dangerous or will put the body into shock since technically they are not the same medication?

Its not dangerous, but a lot of times mixing and matching without the docs help can set you back. It is more common to add a little plain sinemet in some cases to Stalevo. There is however an art to this and you and your doc may discover something that works for you.
