Fear of Parkinsons...thoughts?

4 posts in this topic

Hi all,

I'm a 27 year old man, who over the past 6 months has been dealing with some strange neurological type symptoms, and I've seen quite a few doctors (including 2 neurologists) and haven't received any answers. My symptoms at times have been broad, but recently have only been the following:

-Myoclonus: This comes and goes, but it has happened at all times of the day, usually when I'm sitting or resting. Mostly seems to happens in my legs, back, and abdomen.

-Shaky hands: I only notice it when I'm holding something like a razor, my cell phone, or a fork or knife. I can also see my index fingers shake if I hold them in certain positions. As best I can tell there is no tremor when my hand is completely at rest (say resting on a table or the arm of a chair)

-Tremor in my jaw: If I close my jaw (so my bottom teeth touch my top teeth) my teeth begin to chatter. I can also hear a slight vibration that feels like it's coming from my jaw when I lay my head on my pillow at night. However when my jaw is relaxed or mouth is open, I cannot feel or see any tremor

-Weakness in my hands: I've been a guitar player for 15 years, lately when I play my hands and forearms fatigue very quickly (even now as I type this I can feel a slight bit of lactic acid building up in my forearms, which is unusual).

-weakness/stiffness in neck: This started recently, and I really notice when I drive, it feels like I have to rest my head on the head rest, or else my neck starts to feel stick like I want to let my head sling forward.

Both the neurologists I saw said that my sypmtoms were benign and that I was in perfect health. The 2nd neuro said he thinks I have essential tremor, and put me on Gabapentin. The gaba doesn't seem to be doing anything, and my anxiety over what is wrong with me worsens every day, to the point where I'm question every movement I make "Did that feel slow? abnormal? etc..."

I understand that PD at my age is rare, but I'm just kind of at a loss. I don't have insurance so continuing to go to specialists is expensive, especially when I'm not getting any answers. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would advise trying to get insurance and seeing a movement disorders trained neurologist or going to a Center of Excellence for another opinion. There are many things that can cause these symptoms and you need a firm diagnosis. PD is actually very possible, especially if you have a family history.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I was actually just able to get on a state insurance, which is good, but I can only see people in NH where I live. I asked my father and grandmother, and neither of them could think of anyone in our family who has had Parkinson's, so I guess that is some what good news.

I did a search for Parkinson's specialists in the New Hampshire area, and didn't come up with much. Is there anyone or any place you might be able to recommend in my area? Thank you!

Go ahead and call the NPF helpline and they can address your question. Dartmouth may be the best option.
