What do you suggest when meds don't work

Recommended Posts

Hi Dr. Okun

I am having a hard time getting relief for my PD symptoms. I am very sensitive to any medication and am currently taking Amantadine 100mg 2 times daily, Sinemet 25/100 1/2 tablet 3 times daily and Effexor 150mg 1 time daily. I have tried Mirapex, Requip, and Neupro but the agonists really make my symptoms worse, I stiffen up, my back and neck tighten up then spasm. I shake like crazy, my balance goes off, I start to slow down again and my hypotension gets so bad I faint if I'm not careful standing up. I tried the Neupro (2mg) this past week I put a new patch on for 3 days in a row and couldn't take it for 1 full day the longest was about 5 hours, I haven't had a patch on since last Friday and I'm still feeling the effects, they have lightened up a little the most bothersome problem is my back and neck stiffness and the balance issue. I am a 52 year old female my symptoms started after taking Risperdal, Zyprexa and Abilify.s I have had a DAT scan done already there is definitely Parkinsonism the Sinemet helps but is too strong for me because if take a full tablet my jaw moves uncontrollably to the point of horrible headaches and severe neck and jaw pain. Do you have any suggestions? Are there any holistic treatments you know of?

There are a few small studies on naltrexone for Parkinson's disease symptoms like dyskinesia but we haven't had much luck.
