inherited Parkinson's

Recommended Posts

Dear Dr. Okun;

I am a PD patient since 1995. My son is 44 and he kicks in bed, but  he is not aware of it. Otherwise, he is healthy. His wife recorded a video of him kicking his legs while sound asleep. He does not do this, or other involuntary movements while awake.

Do you see this kicking as an early indication of Parkinson's disease. What steps could you kindly suggest to clarify this issue

Thank you

Sometimes restless legs syndrome does pre-date a diagnosis of Parkinson but this is not always the case.....

Getting him a sleep study could be useful.  REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out your dreams) is strongly associated with a future diagnosis of PD but again is not 100%.
