Hi everyone,

Basically it is ONE (and only one) cautionary tale of unconfirmed harm by supplements.  We all love the idea of 'natural' remedies, and I actively seek out information on trace elements.  I am a firm believer in Tumeric, we have a curried dish at least once a week with black pepper to activate the curcumin within the tumeric.  I resist taking supplements, because trace elements are just that: traces of essential elements.  Pills give you a lot, and very quickly.  The story points out that most curcumin pills have between 1,000 to 2,000 mgs of curcumin, whereas 1 tsp of tumeric only has 50mg of curcumin within it.  I will continue to serve curry often, but thought the article was a good example of a little may be very good for you, but immoderation can be a crap shoot.  Supplements are not regulated, so you never really know what the effects of massive doses might be. 

About 3 years ago one study was done on the effects of rosemary (rosemary for remembrance) among elderly.  They found that 1 tsp of rosemary a week seemed to make people mentally sharper, but eating more than 3 TBsp a day actually hurt mental acuity.  Besides, it tasted bad at that level.  So that was a warning to me; if it tastes bad, it's probably bad for you.  I can't imagine eating a curry made with 200 tsp of tumeric.  Yuk.

Hello, Quiet.  Thanks for sharing this.  Do you know if the amount is in relation to dry or fresh rosemary?

I had been taking Gaia Turmeric (their super-duper strong one), but I have been having trouble with my feet, ankles, and lower legs swelling and getting red.  I stopped it a few months ago hoping it would help, and it seemed to at first, but now I'm having the trouble again.

Yum--I love curry meals.  Care to share some recipes with us?

Regarding Curcumin...according to curcumin researchers at Michigan State University, taking a supplement probably won't do you any good.

"Finding a compound that can fix a protein when it first begins to misfold can lead scientists to identify drugs that can treat certain diseases. Doctors won’t be prescribing curcumin pills any time soon, though, Lapidus said.

“Curcumin’s usefulness as an actual drug may be pretty limited since it doesn't go into the brain easily where this misfolding is taking place,” she said. “But this kind of study showcases the technique of measuring reconfiguration and opens the door for developing drug treatments.”

Curcumin in of itself does not cross the BBB well. There is a patented form called Longvida offered by several companies that has been clinically shown to cross the BBB rather well. As for curcumin and PD, rat studies have done well. But that is as far as it has gone.

Hi, jds.  Appreciate your input,  Here is the info on the kind I take, which includes black pepper extract to help it cross the BBB.  May I get your opinion? http://www.gaiaherbs.com/products/detail/83/Turmeric-Supreme-Extra-Strength

Also, may I pick your brain further?  :-)   In addition to my eating raw almonds, my MDS wants me to take a copper supplement to balance with the zinc I take in.  Drummer Girl on our site recommends something used by natural path MDs, which i've quote below. vI'd love to get your opinion on my using it (which I would very much like to do for the benefit of all the trace minerals), but will it in the end accomplish balancing my zinc and copper levels specifically?  I guess I'm wondering whether taking in even more zinc by taking this product will still make an imbalance?
