alcohol and tremors

Recommended Posts

I have been diagnosed with parkinsonism . My primary symptom is tremors. They started aprox. 18months ago. So far I've taken neurontin, mirapex, and right now Artane. Nothing is working. I mean nothing is even touching the tremors.

This is what seems to be working. A six pack of beer!. Once I have about 6 beers the tremors stop, I'm relaxed. I thought alcohol doesn't effect parkinson tremors, just essential tremors. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Chuck172,

you can visit ask the physician on this forum.I am sure Dr Okun can help you with this question. You said you have been diagnosed with parkinsonism, this means your diagnosis may be any of the other conditions that mimics parkinson disease. There are some other conditions categorized under parkinsonism. You can google parkinsonism to learn more about the other conditions. And be careful with mixng alcohol with some of your medications,as alcohol might interact with some of your medications.Happy New Year in advance.

Hi...I definitely have Parkinson’s, tremor dominat. A glass of wine calms my tremor, two practically takes it away.

Ya it’s great but be careful you don’t add another issue to the one we already have...alcohol won’t cure Parkinson’s as you know but ya it’s nice to get that two hour break!!

If you live in a state with medical marijuana I would consider that over alcahol any day. I plan to move to a state where MMJ is legal and manage some of my symptoms that way.

I’ve also tried CBD oil along with THC Oil....I had to get super high to have any help on the tremor. I’m too busy to be buzzed and not functioning. It works for some but not me. At least with one glass of wine I’m functioning.

I'm writing this for other PWP that may read this post and leave with a better understanding of Medical Marijuana. First off IMHO There is no medicinal benefit to alcohol when consumed.  History will tell us that alcohol creates more problems than almost any other drug. I can't imagine having to drink a 6 pack of beer to benefit my Parkinson's symptoms.

I'm not pushing Medical Marijuana at all, but hope I can impress on someone reading this that it is worth looking into. Treating Parkinson's isn't easy and does require educating yourself about the effects of the meds prescribed and the symptoms each of us have to deal with on a daily basis. We read everything we can and ask other people questions. We dig deep looking for answers.

IMO the same process should be considered when dealing with Medical Marijuana. I see too many posts everywhere that someone has tried and it didn't work for them. Marijuana is not one plant doing one thing. It is a multipurpose plant that can, in my opinion and apparently many others opinions treat a variety of health issues as well as a maintenance to acquire and maintain  a healthy physiology. Marijuana has been proven many times over to be a benefit in many, many situations. States wouldn't be legalizing marijuana for medical purposes if it wasn't true. Never one, not one death from consuming marijuana.

Having a healthy body makes dealing with Parkinson's Disease much easier.

Please educate yourself and develop some curiosity. Don't read just one article. Don't talk to just one person. Read, read, read. I believe in the long run it will be a benefit. We are all desperate for help.

Thank you for reading this.

I'm not a doctor but it sounds like you might actually have essential tremor.  I would seek a second opinion from a highly rated Movement Disorder specialist.  I was initially diagnosed with essential tremor by a neurologist.  I went to another neurologist who specializes in Movement Disorders and was correctly diagnosed with Parkinson's.  I know this because the medicine worked for me.

I had done some research when I thought I had essential tremor.  The disorder involves only a tremor, no other symptoms.  Surprisingly, alcohol is known to help with the tremor!

Like I said, I am not a doctor but I would definitely get a second opinion.

My experience is that anything that relaxes me helps to relieve my tremors - MM, alcohol, resting, music, etc.  Even fun excitement such as watching a really close ballgame will set the tremors off.
