studies on DBS interference?

Recommended Posts

Guest

Do you know of any new studies out regarding EMI issues with DBS? I had DBS surgery in April of 2007 and have serious EMI struggles - more than anyone I have heard of. I recently was given a script for a mobility scooter, but discovered I cannot use them because of EMI. The interference appears as an increase or disruption in the stimulation (hard to tell which), as my dystonia spasms increase greatly during the EMI episode, even though the stimulators are not turned off during that time.

It was severe enough when I test drove GoGo scooter to cause the salesman to reassure me that he knew CPR! He was pretty nervous to see my body stiffen suddenly, but I assured him his CPR skills would not be necessary.

I am used to these problems for the most part and I have ways to cope with them, but I am also discouraged by the lack of study seeming to be devoted to this area of concern.

Thanks!

Thanks for your note. I have not seen anything new on this topic.

Some people with apparent electromagnetic interference to their DBS find out after a workup that the symptoms were activity related and not device relaated.

I hope you feel better.

Thank you for your reply. How would such a work up be done -by the neurologist or Medtronic? What type of testing can help determine if interference is indeed the problem?

Thanks!

I would get an opinion after consultation with an expert in DBS programming (a neurologist or neurosurgeon).

Thank you for the question. I am unaware of a correlation of casino machines and interference with DBS devices.
