When one is having bi-lateral dbs what determines if they receive 1 or 2 stimulators ?

By definition bilateral DBS is two brain leads. In PD this is usally one in each of either the STN or GPi.

 

They may be connected to either one DBS battery-Kinetra; or two batteries--Soletra. Each battery device has advantages and disadvantages. The Kinetra if infected often means removal or both brain leads; whereas the soletra you may end up sparing one. The Soletra's have a slimmer profile....

 

Many centers will implant one brain lead and wait 6 months and assess whether a second one is necessary.
